Finding Out

It was mid-February and I had been working as an EMT for a local ambulance company. My partner and I had been running emergency calls all morning and finally got a break. As was fairly common at the time we had chosen a nice empty parking lot to park our rig, enjoy some lunch, and kick our feet up for a bit. It was later in the morning so the park across the street was abuzz with older couples enjoying a stroll, busy moms trying to stay fit, and friends catching up over coffee.

My partner decided to stretch out in back for a while so I kicked my feet up on the dash. I was enjoying the cool winter air when my phone made the most unassuming noise. It was Allie, my wife. “Probably a good morning text” I thought aloud. Opening the message I realized it was a picture of a pregnancy test. It read Positive 3+ weeks, I began to cry. Never had I been so happy.

I jumped out of the ambulance and immediately called her. I was somewhere between tears and laughter when she answered. I walked around in that parking lot laugh-crying for what seemed like forever. I must have looked like a lunatic to anyone who happened by. I didn’t care, I was happy. All the things we had hoped for and planed were finally coming true.
