In my last post, we talked about the apparent benefits of coconut oil as a treatment for diaper rash and how effectively it worked for my baby. In addition to using coconut oil, we also decided to take a break from conventional wipes while the rash healed.
During my research on alternative treatments, I found that vinegar was at the top of most of the lists. I was familiar with some of it’s more general uses as a household cleaning agent but hadn’t considered it as a personal cleanser.
The advice I read suggested that vinegar was similar to coconut oil in that both have dozens of uses and health benefits. One such source advocated diluting a small amount of vinegar with water, spritzing the mixture on the affected area, dabbing it dry, and rinsing with plain water.
At first, Mads seemed to tolerate the vinegar mixture well but, before too long she seemed to become uncomfortable and cry whenever it was applied. We decided to discontinue the use of the vinegar solution and switched to plain drinking water applied with a spray bottle. PAYDIRT!!!
We allowed the water to soothe the rashy bits for a moment or two, fanning it with a soft paper towel before dabbing the area dry. This combined with the moisturizing power of coconut oil seemed to work for us perfectly. The reason we choose to use paper towels over regular cloth towels is simple. They are cheap, disposable and prevent the reintroduction of any bacteria or matter that had already removed.
Ultimately the vinegar solution wasn’t what worked best for us, however, we were able to find something that did. When considering natural remedies be cognizant of your babies sensitivities or allergies and as always remember to consult your pediatrician.
