A few years ago I wrote a post called “10 Fun Things About Being a Dad.” At the time, those were some of my favorite parts about being a parent.
As my daughter has grown and changed so have my favorite things about being a dad. The following is a list of 5 MOSTLY new things that I enjoy about being a dad…
5 MORE Fun Things About Being a Dad
- Sharing a meal with your little one-
When you child is young you tend to spend most meals trying to keep your baby or toddler from playing with their food or shoving peas in their nose. As they age it becomes easier to keep them clean and you can actually enjoy their company. Is there anything cuter than a peanut butter covered smile? I think not!
- Having a conversation with your child-
One of the simplest joys in my life is being able to hold a conversation with my daughter. When I was a new dad I often found myself wondering how my daughter might look or even sound as she got older. My vision of what would be is not very far off the mark. It’s interesting to see and understand her perception of the world around us. Many very common things are new and mystical to our children and being able to experience them for the first time though their eyes is amazing.
- Kid farts are STILL funny-
No explanation needed for this one! When I was a boy a camp counselor made a remark about manliness and adulthood that has stuck with me ever since. “When you can hear a fart without laughing, that’s when you’ll know you’re a man.” By that standard I doubt Maddie or I will ever be adults.
- Spoiling your child-
When your baby is first born there is no shortage of new fangled devices and other toys to make your job as a parent easier. Even the first couple of Christmases are more about the parent than they are the child. You find yourself with tons of gadgets and gizmos to keep your child clothed and occupied for the next several months. It’s not until your child is a little bit older that they really begin to enjoy the process of gift giving. As a parent, you want to give your child everything their little hearts desire. It’s nice when you can actually accomplish that.
- Seeing your child grow-
This applies not only to physical growth such as getting taller or developing specific family characteristics. It also applies to growing as a person. As a dad, I often ponder my daughter’s emotional growth and am always happy when I see her overcome new obstacles. Whether it’s defeating a mental block keeping her from writing the number two or reasoning away a nightmare. I love seeing her triumph over the trials of childhood.
