As you may have noticed, if you follow us on Instagram and YouTube, we’re in Southern California.
The first thing that comes to mind for a lot of people when thinking about California is beaches. Still, for others it’s popular attractions such as Disneyland and the Hollywood Hills.
As a Californian and a sportsman, the first thing that jumps out at me are the State’s beautiful natural resources. Very few other places in the world have the amazing diversity of the Goldrush State as far as nature is concerned. Take San Diego County for example.
Inside the span of just a few hours you can visit the Badlands of the Anza-Borrego Desert, the snowy peaks of Palomar Mountain, the foothills around the Otay Mountain Wilderness, and the coastal beaches of Coronado and La Jolla. There are so many other places here in the Golden State that share a similar geographical diversity making us a true Outdoorsman’s Paradise.
Here are my Top 3 Best Things About Living in Southern California…
- The Beaches- As you may know, California is known worldwide for it’s beautiful sandy beaches. The warm water, abundant sunshine, and spectacular views make for an outstanding outdoor experience. In addition to swimming, surfing, and suntanning the California coast has some of the finest surf fishing on the West Coast. In my hometown of San Diego you can find Corbina, Croaker, Surf Perch, Striped Bass, Rays, Sharks and dozens of other species. The abundant sea life also makes for fantastic snorkeling and diving as well.
- Hiking/ Camping- Again praising my home county, San Diego has some amazing hikes! Though I’m yet to experience even 1/8th of what the area has to offer, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that you wouldn’t be disappointed by many of them. When I was a boy, I recall my father taking my brother and I to a spot in the Otay Mountains he affectionately referred to as B.F.E., whatever that means. Other popular areas include Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain. In addition, you can find many amazing campgrounds throughout the area. Whether you prefer a more urban experience or the silence of the sticks you’ll find a place that suits you.
- Wildlife Spotting- California is chock-full of wildlife. With 6 species of deer, 18 species of tarantula, 2 species of bear, and countless other types of wildlife you have plenty of opportunity to experience animals in their natural habitat. California is the perfect for wildlife photographers, artists, birdwatchers, and nature observers.
