It is often said there are two kinds of people in the world, which is then followed by a topical statement that is usually incorrect. However, I’ve found one that I think most of us would agree with, “There are two types of people in the world, those who love to read and those that do not.”
My daughter is still developing her reading skills but obviously drawn to it. I love seeing the excitement on her face as she discovers new books and learns bigger words. I’m often amazed as she reads signs and packaging aloud with limited error as we drive around town or shop in stores. Though my favorite is when she reads to me before bed.
But, all is not as it seems…she’s beginning to lose interest in reading because of her school’s reading program. Madison was able to quickly finish all of the age appropriate reading and has surpassed many of her classmates in reading ability. As such, it’s forced her to read at a higher grade level, most of which a kindergartener doesn’t find interesting. We’ve been working to balance the reading Madison has to do with the reading she wants to do, but I’m unsure if we’ll be successful in the long run.
As it sits, Madison and I have a deal. As long as she keeps up on the required reading, I will purchase whatever books that she finds enjoyable. What a problem I have, bribing my child to do schoolwork with reading.
What are some things you’ve done to keep your children engaged in reading?
