HAPPY SUNDAY!!! Sorry for the late post, I was so busy having fun with Mads this week that I forgot to write a blog!
Mads and I are fortunate enough to live near the World Famous San Diego Zoo. We’re even more fortunate to be able to support the San Diego Zoo as members. On Thursday we were able to spend some time exploring the zoo and checking out all of the neat and interesting animals they have on display to share with the world.

Fun Fact: The Polar Bear is considered a Marine Mammal similar to whales, seals, and dolphins.
The San Diego Zoo, also known as The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, has always been proud of it’s worldwide conservation efforts and has even helped save a few species from the brink of extinction.
As an outdoorsman, it’s a cause close to my heart. Without organizations like the SDZWA, there would be no future for a lot of the threatened and endangered species across the globe.

For instance, this week’s trip revealed a shocking and heartbreaking truth about one of my favorite animals, the rhinoceros. As it stands there are only two Northern White Rhinos left in the world. As both known individuals are female, that essentially means the species is extinct. That is thanks, in large part, due to the ever looming threat of poaching. Rhinos are often captured and killed for their horns as many believe that they hold magical and healing properties. In reality rhino horns are made of the same thing our hair and fingernails are made of, keratin.

The SDZWA and other organizations are working to prevent a similar fate for several other species throughout the world. For the SDZWA that looks like putting the money made on tickets, sales, and donations back into animal care, research, and conservation. You may also help protect many of your local species by observing the conservation laws set forth by your area’s Department of Fish & Game. Visit your State’s website to learn more!
