Broken Bones and Busy

Whoops!! It’s been a few weeks since our last post! August was a busy month for Mads’ Dad Blog. Some of it good and some of it not so good.

Over the course of the last month, Madison has done well in school, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise. She’s excelling at her homework and continues to grow as a reader.

So much for the good news…

Madison also managed to break a finger at school this past month. Fortunately, she’s just fine now. Another couple of weeks in a splint should have her back to normal. If you’ve never had a child break a bone, you’re lucky.

Obviously, a finger isn’t a big deal. The recovery process is typically pretty smooth, as is expected for Madison. Yay!!

But, this whole thing reminded me of when my older brother broke his arm sometime in the early 90’s. Mads’ Dad Bro, or Uncle Joel as we like to call him, wasn’t as lucky. With a complex fracture to his dominant arm, it required surgery, a cast, some nights in the hospital, and a few month’s worth of recovery.

Not a day goes by where my brother isn’t reminded of the injury, thanks to a rather large scar on the inside of his right arm. For the record, not a family gathering goes by where he doesn’t blame me for it happening. But more on that another time.

My point is, there is a lesson to be learned for everyone involved. For my brother, it was not to trip and fall on your way to tell on your brother. For Mads, it was to pay attention to what you are doing. For me, it was simply that accidents happen. Your kids are gonna get hurt and sometimes they’ll get hurt in the most innocuous ways. You just have to roll with the punches.
