I’m fortunate that Mads does very well in school. She excels in reading and language arts and gets excited about math and science. Recently, Madison won an award for academic excellence, which got me thinking about something my dad mentioned a while back.
He suggested creating a school portfolio to keep the best of her classwork neat and organized. His thought was to keep work from each grade to show her academic growth and progress, similar to a college portfolio. So, on a whim, I picked up a binder, created a coversheet, and got to work building a school portfolio.
The following is a list of items you can include in your child’s portfolio, along with a FREE printable cover sheet that you can customize with your child’s name and grade!

Report Cards
The Good, the bad, and the needs improvement. The portfolio aims to show academic and social skill growth throughout your child’s school career. A report card does an excellent job of both as they often include remarks from the teacher about their achievements and behavior. This will also be the perfect opportunity to teach them about accountability and to take responsibility for the actions that lead to less-than-desirable marks in citizenship and classwork.
Awards
Awards are something to be celebrated! So you should include them at the front of the portfolio to get your children excited about reviewing their work.
The Subjects
We all remember the R from when we were in school. Include 4 examples of work for every subject they’re taught to showcase your child’s improvement. Ideally, one from each quarter should demonstrate their growth throughout the year.
